Criminal Research Specialist: $75,296.00 - $91,520.00 annual salary
Senior Criminal Research Specialist: $87,547.20 - $106,412.80 annual salary
The Anaheim Police Department is looking for a Senior Criminal Research Specialist or Criminal Research Specialist in the Crime Analysis Unit. The position will be responsible for providing analytical support throughout the department, including compiling and maintaining datasets, analyzing and tracking crime data, mapping trends, and identifying geographic areas of concern. The analyst will provide further support including call data analysis, network analysis, link analysis, temporal analysis, and preparing reports and visualizations.
Criminal Research Specialist - Under direction: gathers, researches, and analyzes criminal data and issues. Identifies relevant data and recommends enhancements to proactive and reactive law enforcement capabilities.
Senior Criminal Research Specialist - Perform responsible work assisting law enforcement staff in the analysis of suspected or documented criminal activity; act as a lead worker and participate in complex research and analytical studies involving operations and programs.
Note: The department has sole discretion to appoint at either level depending on the candidate's level of qualifications.

Criminal Research Specialist

Researches, compiles analyzes data, maps crime trends and patterns; makes recommendation of possible solution to criminal investigative problems; and assists patrol, investigative and administrative staff in planning the deployment of resources for the prevention, intervention and suppression of criminal activities.

Confirms accuracy and reliability of data through investigation and research.

Enhance department capabilities by preparing analytical and/or statistical reports. Effectively communicates report findings both orally and in writing.

Develop crime mapping and analysis of spatially referenced data such as police reports, calls for service, parolees, sex registrants, etc.

Respond to citizens, local businesses, city council, etc. regarding local crime problems.

Establish and maintain contacts with counterparts in other law enforcement agencies and attend all relevant schools and training to keep current with technology and analytical investigative techniques.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Senior Criminal Research Specialist

Plan, prioritize, assign, review and lead the work of staff responsible for providing crime analysis information.

Assist and facilitate the work of staff in the review and analysis of crime reports and related criminal data to identify and evaluate crime series, trends, and patterns.

Coordinate and lead the work of staff in analyzing and evaluating criminal intelligence information.

Assist and train staff in the proper use of crime analysis computer applications, various spreadsheets, and databases.

Assist and train staff in automation tools and methods for generating, organizing and displaying a wide variety of complex statistical and other research data, electronic spreadsheets, word processing, presentation software and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology.

Design and develop crime analysis techniques and methodologies to improve work practices and interface effectively with existing operating systems.

Prepare comprehensive written reports, presentations, maps, and charts based on research, collection, and analysis of intelligence data.

Develop and maintain manual and automated systems for storage and retrieval of crime information; recommend new projects or alternate courses of action to achieve program and operational criminal activity.

Evaluate available information and determine analytical methods to be used; research and prepare comprehensive crime data reports and studies.

Respond to citizens, local businesses, Mayor/City Council members and internal staff regarding local crime problems.

Collaborate with representatives from other government and intelligence organizations to share information or coordinate intelligence activities.

Experience and Training: performing advanced journey level research and analysis relative to criminal activity and statistics; complex analytical report writing experience supplemented by accredited college course work in criminal justice, statistics, or a related field or official designation as a certified crime analyst through the California Department of Justice (DOJ). An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
