The City of Colton is searching for a highly motivated, reliable, and skilled individual to join the Colton Police Department for the newly created position of Crime Analyst! This position will play a vital role in successfully providing analytical assistance to the department relating to crime trends and "hot spots".  The position will be open until filled so apply ASAP.

DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, is assigned to perform analytical support, research and data collection in support of community policing and crime prevention; perform crime analysis of data collected; directs the collection and analysis of crime data, provides technical support for the operation of various computer systems, including software programs specific to the police department; and perform other related duties as assigned.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Crime Analyst is a journey level, non-sworn position class responsible for crime prevention, maintaining up-to-date statistics related to crime trends, “hot spots” for the overall effort to improve processes in preventing and reducing crime, and assisting with investigations. 
 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

May occasionally exercise indirect supervision over lower level staff.

Essential Functions

• Research, gather, and analyze complex data from police arrests, crime reports and statistics to identify crime trends/patterns and “hot spots”.
• Direct the collection and analysis of crime data. 
• Design and format department databases for maintaining and tracking statistical information to identify crime patterns. Extract and present information as requested. Recommend systems or software to improve department processes to police management. 
• Research, create and approve all confidential law enforcement bulletins, such as “WANTED” flyers, Missing Persons, and crime watch alerts.
• Prepare reports, charts, maps, posters and other visual presentations in support of management staff. 
• Communicate with outside law enforcement agencies and collaborate with other crime analysts on mutual cases. Develop and maintain positive liaison with other criminal justice personnel and others in the course of work.
• Collect, analyze and report on data from new and cold cases. 
• Develop crime prevention concepts based on statistic data. Assist in the development of tactics, strategies and planning in response to crime trends. 
• Maintain confidentiality of all sensitive information, data and items of evidence. 
• May be required to testify in court, and/or court appearances.
• Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
• Perform non-emergency law enforcement duties as assigned.

Qualifications

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
A typical way to obtain this knowledge and abilities would be:
 
Education:          A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in criminal justice, police sciences or a related field is required.                         

AND

Experience:        Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience performing research, statistical, or crime analysis in a law enforcement agency.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

• Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and good driving record.

• Possession of a Crime and Intelligence Analysis certificate (CCIA) from the California Department of Justice within 18 months of appointment.  

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in Microsoft Office Applications including Social Media.  in addition to experience with audio-visual equipment used in presentations the ideal candidate will also possess strong written and oral communication skills, and innovative ideas.

Principles of data collection, record keeping, analysis and research techniques and methods. Principles of mathematics and statistics. Reporting and writing for presentations and informational purposes. Criminal justice system functions and processes, including GIS mapping. Proper use of crime related terminology and crime prevention concepts. Modern office practices, methods and equipment. Proper use of the English language, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. 

Ability to:

Read, understand and interpret crime data, patterns and trends. Prepare and interpret tables, charts, graphs and reports. Present clear and concise oral or written statistical reports for various groups and individuals. Maintain security and confidentiality of all privileged information and items of evidence. Analyze and plan for future software/hardware needs or requirements. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with internal and external staff. 

Skill To:
Operate a motor vehicle on City streets. Operate computer and applicable software.
