Under immediate supervision (Crime Analyst I), general supervision (Crime Analyst II), performs crime analysis work in support of law enforcement activities and performs related duties as required.

Crime Analyst I is the entry-level classification in this series. Incumbents perform the more routine assignments requiring the application of basic data research and analysis principles.

Crime Analyst II is the journey-level classification in this series. Incumbents perform complex technical assignments requiring professional knowledge and skills in conducting data research and analysis projects, formulating recommendations, and communicating findings effectively and are expected to exercise independent judgment working within established systems.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in a crime analysis unit analyzing crime statistics and providing intelligence information for a law enforcement agency.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Collects, compiles, computes, analyzes, and summarizes crimes, persons, and demographic and related data from a wide variety of sources including but not limited to crime, census, economic, and demographic reports;
  • Identifies crime patterns from analysis of data and makes oral and written presentations to police personnel to assist in the effective allocation and deployment of law enforcement resources in the control of crime activities;  
  • Prepares reports to assist in criminal investigations and/or to make intelligence assessments;
  • Prepares graphic displays including charts, maps, calendars, and related materials to effectively present statistical data; attends meetings and briefings; presents analytical findings;
  • Conducts research and analysis related to suspects, incidents, locations, trends, and series; 
  • (Crime Analyst II) May develop crime/suspect and suspect/crime correlations and target profile analysis;
  • Acts as liaison with law enforcement, government agencies, and community groups to obtain and/or provide crime-related data;
  • Learns to use (Crime Analyst I) or uses (Crime Analyst II) quantitative and qualitative methodology such as link analysis, event flow analysis, and activity charting to analyze data;
  • May testify in court and travel to crime scenes; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.
